Water-based coatings, often acrylic, are made up of various percentage chemical components dispersed in water. The binder is an acrylic or polyurethane resin emulsified or dispersed in water.
Since the solvent content is much lower, their impact on the environment and on human health is decidedly less harmful: the pollution in the air will be significantly less, and the toxicity for the operators will also be less.
The characteristics of water-based coatings
Hydroplus water-based coatings are designed to reduce the absorption of moisture and solar radiation. In this way they guarantee advantages in terms of resistance to the outside and reduction of solvent emissions.
The transparent and pigmented Hydroplus thixotropic topcoats have good elasticity, absence of blocking phenomena, good vertical hold, excellent distension and good resistance to tin sedimentation.
Durability has always been the first criterion for evaluating wood coatings for exteriors.
With the Hydroplus water-based products, the durability of the coated wooden windows has made a substantial step forward. The duration outside is higher.
Unlike solvent-based coatings, water-based wood coatings maintain a high degree of elasticity over time, which allows the paint film to follow the movements of the wood without being damaged. Many Hydroplus topcoats are thixotropic. This feature makes it possible to apply a high product thickness, maintaining an excellent level of relaxation and transparency.
In order to guarantee a good resistance to the outside, the clear products of the Hydroplus series have been formulated with an optimal dose of UV absorbers, which prevent the UV radiation from striking the wood directly and reduce the loss of color of the wood, in this way avoiding degradation.
The lacquered finishes contain very opaque pigments that are resistant to sunlight. HYDRO GOLD represents the cutting edge of the range of coatings for exteriors: international patent and guarantee of durability up to 18 years.
The Hydroplus coatings selected for ANTI-AGE SYSTEM are studied seeking the maximum protection of the wood and the paint film: these acrylic coatings guarantee 10 years of durability to the external doors and windows coated with the selected Hydroplus coating systems for this purpose.
In the coating of the furniture and the furnishing components, the aesthetic result is fundamental. Coating wood using Hydroplus water-based products makes it possible to obtain finishes that, due to their appearance and softness, are indistinguishable from those obtained with solvent-based products.
In fact they guarantee a level of mechanical and chemical resistance comparable to that of polyurethane coatings.
“Using water-based coating means choosing a product type that is more eco-compatible and reducing the emission of harmful substances”
Over the last few years an environmental awareness has grown, attentive to the health of operators and end customers. Furniture with an eco-compatible finish is increasingly sought after, and therefore with the lowest possible emission of solvents, both during coating and during the slow final drying phase.
Painters must use products that contain the minimum of harmful substances, in order to guarantee respect for the environment.
The advantages of using water-based coatings
One-pack water-based products, especially wood coatings for interiors, have no pot life problems such as traditional solvent-based polyurethane products.
They are simple and practical because they are ready to use, and the product can be recovered and reused, provided it is reintroduced into its original tin and carefully closed. Prolonged contact with air must be avoided.
When it is not possible to renounce to the maximum performance guaranteed by the addition of an isocyanic catalyst (kitchens, furnishings for bars and discos, table tops, etc.), the hardeners AH1545 or AH1550 can be used.
These products react chemically like the normal isocyanate-based resins of the second component of polyurethanes. However, thanks to their particular composition, they are stabilized and therefore miscible with water-based products, guaranteeing a pot life of up to 4 hours, after which the material is no longer usable.
Economic advantages:
- Overspray reduction up to 25%.
- Recovery of overspray in automatic systems.
- Unlimited pot life for single-component products.
Environmental advantages:
- 95% reduction in emissions compared to synthetic products, therefore low environmental impact
- Improvement of the work environment.

- Excellent chemical resistance.
- Reduced yellowing acrylic systems.
- Short drying times
- Longer outdoor life
- Hold of gloss
- Non-yellowing film

Practical advantages:
- Ready to use.
- Use of water for washing equipment.
- Simplicity of use.
- No problem of flammability and self-combustion, and therefore of storage.
Water-based coatings for wood, application methods and most common supports
Water-based coatings are normally applied by spray, roller or brush. Hydroplus products can be applied with normal spray coating systems (cup, airless, airmix, electrostatic) as long as the construction materials of the equipment are suitable for contact with water.
Available in different formulations and gloss levels, water-based coatings are mainly used for finishing wood, glass and iron, but they also give excellent results on plastic, PVC, etc.
