PRODUCTS FOR EXTERIOR USE
Hydroplus water-based varnishes, formulated to reduce the absorption of moisture and the sun’s radiation, deliver advantages in terms of outdoor resistance and reduced solvent emissions.
Hydroplus thixotropic topcoats, transparent and pigmented, are non-blocking and offer good elasticity, good vertical hold, excellent flow and good resistance to settling within the can.
In order to ensure good outdoor resistance, Hydroplus-series products have been formulated with an optimal dose of UV absorbers, with the addition of free-radical scavengers. While the former reduces wood yellowing and the lignin destruction, the latter increases durability of the outdoor exposure. They reduce the issues of chalking and loss of gloss, in addition to boosting the effectiveness of the UV absorbers.
Synthetic products for woodwork exposed to the elements are normally made with long-oil alkyd resins. These products feature excellent application conditions, frost resistance, initial gloss, non-blocking, chemical resistance, reduced grain raising, suitable for application to all species of wood, quality price.
ACID CURED
Two-pack products with a good quality to price ratio mainly used in the interior furniture sector.
POLYURETHANES
Polyurethane varnishes are two-pack products: one base part and one hardener. They are designed to be mixed in given amounts immediately prior to use and that cure by means of chemical reaction.
Polyurethane basecoat and topcoat products offer exceptional elasticity, quick drying properties, good adhesion properties and UV stability. They are particularly versatile. Products can be applied with a whole range of different coating systems: spray gun, curtain coating, airless, electrostatic and automatic systems. Using polyurethane varnishes gives woodwork a special level of topcoat that cannot be rivalled by single-pack varnishes in terms of surface hardness, chemical resistance and mechanical strength.
The extensive range of Sayerlack polyurethane basecoat and topcoats cater to all manner of furniture coating needs with excellent aesthetic results, mechanical strength, chemical resistance, quick drying properties and extremely short working times.
Varnishes from the polyurethane series are advanced products that are suitable for finishing furniture on an industrial scale and are the products most commonly used for:
- coating chairs
- frames
- cabinet doors
- joinery
- wood flooring
- furniture in general
THINNERS
To adjust the coating’s viscosity to the right level for application.
UV CURED
Generally ready-to-use acrylic varnishes for industrial use, water- or solvent-based. The main advantages in using UV-dried varnishes are:
- high production speeds
- space saving in the manufacturing area
- coatings with very long or unlimited pot life
- low or zero solvent emissions into the air
- coated items that are ready to pack at the end of the production process.
Light is an electromagnetic wave. It’s just one component of the full range of radiation that goes from radio waves to gamma radiation, on the electromagnetic spectrum. Within the electromagnetic spectrum, only a very small portion belongs to the visible spectrum and another to the ultraviolet spectrum.
The portion of radiation involved in the polymerization of varnishes is within this ultraviolet spectrum.
Ultraviolet is the name given to a range of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 100 and 400 nm, sitting between the visible spectrum and X-rays. Some substances actually absorb a great amount of UV, emitting other longer wavelength radiation, generally in the visible range. In the curing of varnishes, UV radiation is absorbed by special substances called photo initiators. They absorb UV ray energy, triggering a chain reaction within the varnish and allowing for a very fast polymerization process.
NITROCELLULOSE
These products form a film simply through the evaporation of the solvents. Nitrocellulose basecoatsare used as fillers, while nitrocellulose topcoats are used when a specific look is required.
Topcoats can be divided into matt, low sheen, gloss and high gloss. They feature quick drying properties, surface hardness, workability, ease of application, excellent bonding and an attractive and decorative look, in addition to an exceptionally smooth film.
Simple thinning is all that’s required for effortless application on both open-pore and closed-pore coating system, using a whole host of different application systems with excellent aesthetic results. Their use really brings out the natural qualities of the wood used. They are very popular for the coating of fine period furniture and elaborate pieces, ultimately providing an infinite array of aesthetic solutions.
ADDITIVES, OILS AND OTHER PRODUCTS
Additives are products used to correct or optimise coatings. Oils are products of a synthetic nature, easy to use. They are excellent for wood reviving products for the furniture and flooring and restoring gloss level, bringing out the natural grain and producing a unique effect.
PIGMENTS, COLORANTS AND DYES
Pigmented pastes, soluble and insoluble colourants whose purpose is to produce the desired shade of colour. Pigmented topcoats hide the substrate completely, insoluble colourants provide a harmonizing effect appearance without hiding the substrate completely, while soluble colourants allow the wood grain to show through.
REDOX POLYESTERS
Polyester wood varnishes, especially primers, offer high hiding power and excellent performance for high gloss coating systems. They’re often used for coating fine furniture, such as in boat wood interiors. High-filling power redox polyesters are used, above all, in gloss-topcoat systems.
WATER-BASED FOR INTERIOR USE
Aesthetic results are key when coating furniture. Hydroplus water-based paints can be used to produce topcoats whose appearance and smoothness are proven to be indistinguishable from those achieved with solvent-based products. They ensure the same kind of mechanical strength and chemical resistance as two-pack polyurethane topcoats.
Today’s environmental conscience with focus on the health of operators and end customers alike calls for furniture to be coated in an environmentally compatible way. Hence with as little solvent emission as possible, both during the coating stage and during the products’ slow final drying in people’s homes. Varnishers are choosing products that contain as few harmful substances as possible. Sayerlack is at the forefront of this research.
